Thenthereareagreatmanyclimbingplants,thattwistthemselvesroundandroundthetrunksandbranchesofthetrees.Theyarecalledvegetablecables,becausetheyaresomuchlikeropes.Theyreachfromonetreetoanother,andalmostfillupthespacesbetween.Thewhitemanhastocarveouthiswaywithhishatchet,orelseburnapassageforhimselfthroughthedensemass.
Dangersofeverykindlurkintheforest.ThequicksubtleIndiandarenotventuretherewithouthispoisonedarrows,northewhitemanwithoutthethunderandlightningofhisgun.Thevenomous①snakemayliecoiledamongthebushes,ortracesofthesavagejaguar②maybeseenuponthepath.
Birds,beasts,andinsectslivethere,forthemostpart,undisturbed.Itistheirhome;andoneverysidetheyareatwork,huntingtheirprey,orescapingfromdanger.Forthoughmanseldomwageswaruponthem,thesewildcreaturesoftheforestareengagedinconstantwarfarewitheachother;andtheweakarealwaysusingsomecontrivance①toprotectthemselvesfromthestrong.
ThereareagreatmanycuriousthingstobeseenintheseSouthAmerican
forests.Inthedeepestgloom,wherethetreesshutoutthesun,myriads②oflightsflitabout,andtwinklelikelittlestars.Astheyflashhereandthere,youmightfancythattroopsoffairieswerefloatingaboutwithtorchesintheirhands;buttherearenofairiesinthecase,—thelightsareonlythetorchesofthefirefliesthatliveintherecesses③ofthewoods,andeverynightmakeakindofilluminationamongstthetrees.
Therearetroopsofmonkeys,thatrunalongthevegetablecablesfromonetreetoanother,orswingfromthebranchesbytheirtails,makinganoiseallthetimeasiftheyweretalkingtoeachother.Whennightcomestheyrollthemselvesintoaball,huddledtogetherascloseasmaybe,tokeepthemselveswarm.
Sometimesithappensthatafewlittlemonkeyshavenotbeenalert④enoughtogetintotheball,andareleftshiveringoutside.Theykeepupapitifulhowlingthewholenightthrough,asiftheyweretellingtheresthowcoldandmiserabletheyare,andbeggingtobeletin.Buttheotherspaynoattention,andgoquietlyofftosleep.
Thenthereareallsortsofwonderfulbirds,suchasweneverseeinourcountry,exceptincages.
Flocksofparrotsglisteninthesun,cladinglowingscarlet,andgreen,andgold.Humming-birds,likegemsofbeauty,cometoseekhoneyandinsectsfromtheforestflowers.Fly-catchersgleamandsparkleeverywhere.Water-fowlofsnowyplumagesportonthestreams,theirwhitedressescontrastingwiththoseoftheredflamingo,orthescarletibis,thatstandpatientlyfishingontheshore.
