Told in alternating voices, this is the story of two boys who
come to spend the summer at Bird Lake, each affected by something
he has tried to escape from. Mitch, twelve, begins his summer at
his grandparents’ house hating his father—who walked out on Mitch
and his mom just two-and-a-half weeks earlier—and feeling isolated
from his sullen mother and cold grandparents. Ten-year-old
Spencer’s family has decided to return to Bird Lake years after his
brother, Matty, drowned there. Mitch is defensive and fragile after
his family’s betrayal, and Spencer for the first time feels haunted
by Matty’s death as his family searches for some sort of closure.
