南海及邻域分布不同性质和不同层次的构造单元。在欧亚板块、印度-澳大利亚板块和菲律宾海-太平洋板块以及特提斯洋多板块汇聚及多动力系统相互作用的区域背景下，南海地质构造图以“地球系统多圈层构造观”和板块构造理论为指导，遵循深部控制浅部、区域约束局部和海陆统筹的研究原则，将南海及邻域划分为三级构造单元，其中一、二级为大地构造单元，三级为叠置构造单元，突出反映中生代以来东亚大陆边缘构造演化格局。一级构造单元为欧亚板块、菲律宾海板块和东亚洋陆边缘汇聚带3个构造单元。二级构造单元为板块内的地块、边缘海盆（洋壳区）、对接带、蛇绿混杂岩带、俯冲带、岛弧、弧-陆（弧-弧）碰撞带，共20个构造单元。三级构造单元在二级构造单元之下进一步细分，包括盆地、海盆（次海盆、残留海盆）、微陆块、隆起区、结合带、蛇绿混杂岩带（增生杂岩带、增生楔）、岩浆弧（火山弧、洋内弧、增生弧）、海台等，共84个构造单元。
