本书是 高职高专规划教材，是按照 对高职高专人才培养工作的指导思想，结合编者团队多年专业英语教学经验编写的。本书自2005年出版以来，被众多高职院校和企业选用，受到广泛好评。读者普遍反映，本书具有系统性强、文章简练、注释详尽等特点，在实现从基础英语向专业英语的过渡、培养阅读高分子材料相关专业英文文献资料的能力等方面发挥了重要作用。
为深化职业教育教师、教材、教法“三教”改革和适应新时期对专业人才培养的需要，编者团队对多年的使用情况和读者反馈的建议进行了总结，并根据现代职教理念，立足于学生岗位职业能力的培养以及结合企业培训的实际需要，在保持前两版编写特色的基础上，对教材内容进行了全面优化，主要修订如下：
1. 更新内容
（1）对落后的知识、技术等内容进行了全面更新；
（2）补充了许多对理解专业内容有帮助的图表等；
（3）对单词、词组、句子注释等进行了修改和补充；
（4）重新标注单词音标，并优化排版方式。
2. 融入思政
在每课后的“阅读材料”中新增前沿技术发展情况介绍等，激发学生对专业的兴趣和热爱，落实立德树人。
本书中的每课均由课文（Text）、单词（New Words，包括音标及解释）、注释（Notes）、练习（Exercises）和阅读材料（Reading Material）组成。每课的课文和阅读材料均可独立成篇，取自不同风格的专业文献资料，具有词汇量适中、覆盖面广的特点。附录中的高分子材料专业名词术语表（Glossary of Polymer Material），有利于查阅。
本书由徐州工业职业技术学院刘琼琼主编，宋帅帅主审。具体编写分工为：PART A和PART B由徐州工业职业技术学院张小萍编写；PART C，PART F的Unit 1和Unit 2由常州工程职业技术学院高炜斌编写；PART D，PART E和PART F的Unit 3及附录和词汇表由刘琼琼编写。在编写过程中，还得到了各兄弟院校和化学工业出版社的大力支持，在此深表谢意。
