本书以历时原型语义学为研究框架，探索汉语“破”类动词的历时概念变异。历时原型语义学整合了原型理论、历时语义学以及词汇范畴化，基于原型概念结构从外延和内涵两个层面探讨词汇的历时概念变异。“破”类动词是表征分离状态变化事件，即物体由完整状态进入不完整状态的词汇范畴。既往研究基于不同理论视角从共时层面论述了“破”类动词的句法和概念结构，但是对该类动词的概念边界仍存在争议。基于历时原型语义学，本书将“破”类动词的概念结构研究由共时层面扩展到历时层面、由句法层面扩展到多维概念层面，旨在揭示这类词汇范畴的概念变异路径及深层认知机制。
