The books initial critical reception was modest, but it was popular with the public and has never been out of print. In the years since publication the books reputation has grown; it is generally considered one of Waughs best works, and has more than once figured on unofficial lists of the 20th centurys best novels.

伊夫林沃（1903-1966）英国著名小说家，被誉为英语文学史上极具摧毁力、成果显著的讽刺小说家之一。是一位优秀的文体家，作品文字简洁，文笔辛辣，结构巧妙。
1903年，伊夫林沃出生于英国汉普斯特德的一个文学世家，父亲是著名出版商和文学评论家。沃从小受家庭环境影响，热爱文学。自1928年发表第一部长篇小说《衰落与瓦解》一举成名后，他先后出版了20余部长篇小说，多部短篇小说集及不少游记。
1998年，著名的兰登书屋现代文库评选出20世纪百佳英文小说，沃有三部作品入选，包括《一抔尘土》（1934）、《独家新闻》（1938）、《故园风雨后》（1945）。
