马竞松，多伦多大学中国文学博士，在多伦多大学教授中国文学、语言和翻译。著有英文著作《文学是心与道的交融》，译著有《情感的理趣》和《我们时代的音乐：罗伯特舒曼文选》等。从事古典文论、海外华文作家及翻译研究。
吴小燕，博士，多伦多大学副教授，英中翻译专业、中英英中双语课主管。治学与出版范围包括跨文化背景下的古今汉语教学，翻译理论与实践，谣谚、诗词、歌词创作，普通语言学、社会语言学、语言的社会学、加拿大华文作家研究等。

在东西方文化交流日趋频繁、北美学术界对高阶汉语的需求更加迫切的今日，《当代加拿大华裔作家作品赏析》（Appreciation of the Works
by Contemporary Chinese-Canadian Writers）是专为大学高级汉语课程设计而编写的文学教材。它除了配合当地的语言环境，备有简体和繁体中文对照，还辟有英文注解和释要，从而凸显其深刻的时代性、现实性、多元性和异域性。
本册高级文学教材在多伦多大学士嘉堡校区和密西沙加校区多次使用，反映良好，为学生提供了切近加拿大社会生活的题材，丰富多彩的语言特色和各有千秋的写作风格，以及令人深思的讨论课题。学生对教材兴趣浓厚，不但颇有心得，并且学以致用。自然，本书对于关心海外华裔作家的写作历程的读者，甚至对于留学加美学生的家长等国内外读者，亦颇有阅读价值。
我们为此精心挑选了八位加拿大华裔作家，所收作品在海内外荣获各类文学奖项，广受好评。每一章推介一位作家，体例依次为作者介绍、创作历程、客观评价、作品欣赏、词语选注、思考题材、扩展阅读的统一体例来编写。这些作品反映了华人的移民生活和对中西文化的反思。葛逸凡的《金山华工沧桑录》追述了早期中国移民在加拿大修建铁路的血泪史；陈浩泉则在《寻找伊甸园》中描述了香港太空人的苦辣酸甜；川沙从《阳光》的多组光谱中折射出信仰、政见和文化的冲突；孙博笔下的《茶花泪》塑造了沦为娼妓的异类女性移民；李彦的《红浮萍》挖掘了知识女性漂泊而斑斓的命运；余曦展现了中国新移民在《安大略湖畔》公寓的维权斗争；张翎委婉地道出了《余震》的痛楚所引致的心灵震撼；曾晓文的《移民岁月》呈现了当今移民和小留学生的拼搏和纠结。这些作家为我们栩栩如生地描绘了际遇各异、甘苦自知的移民群体。
我们在本书的编写过程中得到了以上八位作家的通力合作，遗憾的是未能收录更多的优秀作家及作品，尤其是陈河的作品。

Preface
In the present world, the exchange of
cross-cultural communication between East and West has become increasingly
frequent and in turn, there has been an urgent demand for advanced Chinese
textbooks in North American universities. Appreciation
of the Works by Contemporary Chinese-Canadian Writers is specially designed
for advanced Chinese courses overseas. It is in both simplified and traditional
Chinese characters for the purpose of teaching needs. Therefore, it stands out
among other readers due to its contemporaneity, realistic content, diversity,
and western context.
This reader has been
used as a textbook in advanced Chinese courses at the University of Toronto
Scarborough and Mississauga campuses. It has proved to be a practical and
meaningful reader in terms of readability and relevance, providing students
with topics close to life, colourful language, distinctive writing styles, and
intriguing discussion questions. Students showed great interest and gained
valuable linguistic and cultural knowledge from the reader. Furthermore, it
also benefits parents and those who are interested in overseas Chinese writers
and Chinese language education in North American universities.
We took great care to
select eight Chinese Canadian writers whose works have won various prestigious
awards in China and abroad. Aiming at the integration of structure, culture,
and application of language learning, it presents one writer in each chapter.
Each chapter comprises seven parts, including the introduction of the writer, the
creation of the work, the criticism of the work, an excerpt from the work,
vocabulary, and discussion topics. All the works reflect the life of Chinese
immigrants and the interplay between Eastern and Western culture. Ge Yifans
work reveals the history of early migrant workers who shed blood and tears
building the pacific railroad. William Chen illustrates the joys and sorrows of
the spaceman from Hong Kong during 1990s. Chuan Sha takes on the conflicts
in religion, ideology, and culture between east and west. Sun Bo portrays a
young woman forced into a prostitution in exchange for immigrant status. Li Yan
excavates intellectual womens drifting fate. Yu Xi reveals how condominium
owners safeguard their rights against a rising maintenance fee. Zhang Ling
recounts the tale of an earthquake survivor suffering painful emotional
turmoil. Zeng Xiaowen describes the struggle and entanglement faced by current
immigrants and international students. Though these novels tell a diverse set
of stories, Chinese immigrants can find themselves in their depictions of these
vivid and colourful lives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the eight
writers and critics for their cooperation and indispensable contribution. We
would like to add our regret at being unable to include more excellent writers
and their works, especially those of Chen he. We also express our sincere
