一把旧钥匙上发现的名言—— “人若休，便易锈” ——于因懒散而烦恼之人，有深刻的指导意义。即便最为勤勉之人也以此作为警示。如若我们弃才不用，才能便如废弃钥匙之铁一般，锈迹斑斑，一无所用。
于心怀壮志，意欲超越伟人所达高度之人，需常用自身之才，如此，方能打开知识之门，以通往各人类文明之室，诸如科学、艺术、文学、农业等。
勤勉可令成功宝库之匙常亮。如若休·米勒日出劳于采石场，日落便休于闲情中，他将永无可能成为知名地质学家。如若著名数学家爱德蒙·斯通闲暇之际便蹉跎光阴，他将无以出版数学词典，无以发现开启数学宝库之钥匙。如若苏格兰少年弗格森在山上放羊之时，未借串珠以计算星星之位，而将聪慧之大脑憩于山野之间，则断不能成为知名天文学家。
劳动征服一切。此劳动非为多变、间歇、方向偏离之琐碎劳动，而为坚定、不懈、方向正确之连续劳动。正如时刻警醒是自由之基石，不懈努力亦是宏伟且持久成功之保障。

The significant inscription found on an old key—“If I rest, I rust”—would be an excellent motto for those who are afflicted with the slightest bit of idleness. Even the most industrious person might adopt it with advantage to serve as a reminder that, if one allows his faculties to rest, like the iron in the unused key, they will soon show signs of rust and, ultimately, cannot do the work required of them.
Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must keep their faculties polished by constant use, so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gate that guard the entrances to the professions, to science, art, literature, agriculture—every department of human endeavor.
Industry keeps bright the key that opens the treasury of achievement. If Hugh Miller, after toiling all day in a quarry, had devoted his evenings to rest and recreation, he would never have be-come a famous geologist. The celebrated mathematician, Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to science of mathematics, if he had given his spare moments to idleness, had the little Scotch lad, Ferguson, allowed the busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on the hillside instead of calculating the position of the stars by a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer.
Labor vanquishes all—not inconstant, spasmodic, or ill-directed labor; but faithful, unremitting, daily effort toward a well-directed purpose. Just as truly as eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, so is eternal industry the price of noble and enduring success.
